Impro has few trans national touchstones. Sure, there’s the eternal flame-war between Delheads and Johnstone clans, but the form, for the most part, rests uneasily in its own transience.

Here, Tony chats about one significant moment in improv, the early days of ‘The Moose’. On working with Keith Johnstone and the creation of the seminal formats, Theatresports tm (and its subsequent bastardization) and The Life Game tm.

The role of genre in story and our responsibility, or otherwise, to research its beats, Norwegian mythology and impro, why use set when you can mime,… and just how would you improvise in the style of Conan the Barbarian?

Ep 7: Story theory with Jason Geary

Can screenplay story techniques teach us improvisers a thing or two?  According to Melbourne writer and improviser Jason Geary, the answer is not only “yes,” but an assertion that story design bears deeper lessons that go the heart of our craft.

TFPC ep 7 Jason Geary Story Theory

Attending a Robert McKee story seminar set off all sorts of sparks for Jason Geary. A seventeen year veteran improviser of international festivals and the Australian stage, along with extended television credits, he found himself drawn to McKee’s story deconstruction. Beyond the lessons for writers, he sensed in the teachings an integral design, a launching pad  for richer improvised theatre.

Protagonist empathy. Slider Theory.  Scene charge. Cast design. All manner of connections erupted and here, in Ep 7 , Jason speaks about the changes in his approach to improv through the prism of McKee story design.

The rigours, the challenges. The aspiration of building a common improv language  so we can step on stage and discover a story, not tell it.

Ep 4: Dan O’Connor – Unscripted Success

Long-form improv is a delicate beast. A missed offer here, a beat over-run there, and an entire story can shudder and collapse. So imagine attempting two-act, fully costumed plays on the fly.

Los Angeles based Dan O’Connor and Impro Theatre have done just that withtheir “Unscripted” series, and in the process, transformed a traditional improv troupe into an acclaimed repertory theatre company.

In this episode, writer, actor and director, Dan O’Connor, speaks about Impro Theatre’s process of inspiring themselves and the work involved in forging a considerable creative reputation in a city jam-packed with improv troupes. Their Unscripted plays have gathered mass audience and seduced a jaded theatre press into reconsidering just what improv can be.

We discuss the friction and freedoms of style and story. Does the moment compete with archetype or enhance it? How do you spontaneously build a first act climax? Is it okay for a director to get in there and kick a few narrative heads while a show is underway? And what of improv’s natural comedic bent and the perils of dramatic self-indulgence?

And just what does happen when a character in an improv show dies…and the audience weeps?

He speaks of the flagmarks of the journey thus far, and of his aspirations for what Impro Theatre can yet be.
